Abstract:

Solidarity is colloquially understood to involve a sense of “being in it together.” It is tempting to believe that being in solidarity requires people to relate their feelings, attitudes or sentiments to others in the right ways. If this is all that were required, then working together in shared action would merely be something that agents might do in solidarity. I argue that being in solidarity requires actions that are actually performed together. Appeals to shared action best support the view that private and ineffective expressions of feeling ought not be considered paradigmatic of solidarity.
